The US Attorney’s Office in Minneapolis has charged fifteen people with “conspiracy to impede federal officers,” accusing them of defending their neighborhoods from ICE.
Across Minnesota and all around the country, hundreds of thousands of people have come together to form rapid response networks and protect their neighbors from mercenaries who are separating parents from their children and brutalizing people regardless of their immigration status. As ICE agents murder people in the streets, federal authorities want to pretend that those who stand up to ICE represent the real threat to the public.
This prosecution is a part of NSPM-7, the Trump administration’s initiative to turn the War on Terror against “antifa”—which is to say, against anyone who opposes fascism. The goal of these charges is to intimidate people out of standing up for each other. Make no mistake, this prosecution is directed at all who do not welcome authoritarianism. If it succeeds, they will repeat this strategy again, targeting more and more people.
In the face of fascist violence, the only route to safety is collective organizing. Solidarity is self-preservation. The harder it is for them to capture today’s targets, the longer it will take them to target the rest of us.
