Today, in that tradition, we might refine it thus: _War is already here—it's just not very evenly distributed._ Never again will the battlefield be just state versus state; it hasn't been for some time. Nor are we seeing simple conflicts that pit a state versus a unitary insurgent that aspires to statehood. Today's wars feature belligerents of all shapes and sizes: states (allied and non-allied), religious zealots (with or without a state), local and expatriate insurgents, loyalists to former or failing or neighboring regimes, individuals with [a political mission](http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/features/american-anarchists-ypg-kurdish-militia-syria-isis-islamic-state-w466069) or personal agenda, and agents of chaos who benefit from the instability of war itself. Anyone or any group of any size can go to war. The increased accessibility of the technology of disruption and war[^techofwar] means the barrier to entry is getting lower all the time. The structure of future wars will sometimes feel familiar, as men with guns murder children and bombs level entire neighborhoods—but it will take new forms, too. Combatants will manipulate markets and devalue currencies. Websites will be subject to DDoS attacks and disabling—both by adversaries and by ruling governments. Infrastructure and services like hospitals, banks, transit systems, and HVAC systems will all be vulnerable to attacks and interruptions. In this chaotic world, in which new and increasing threats ceaselessly menace our freedom, technology has become an essential battlefield. Amazon, Google, and Apple are always listening[^listening] and sending some amount[^siri] of what they hear back to their corporate data centers[^datacenter]. [Cops want that data](https://engadget.com/2016/12/27/amazon-echo-audio-data-murder-case). Uber, Lyft, Waze, Tesla, Apple, Google, and Facebook know your whereabouts and your movements [all of the time](http://npr.org/sections/alltechconsidered/2016/12/01/503985473/uber-now-tracks-passengers-locations-even-after-theyre-dropped-off). [Employees spy](http://boingboing.net/2017/01/10/apple-store-employees-fired-af.html) on [users](https://engadget.com/2016/12/12/uber-workers-spied-on-celebrities). [Police](http://dailydot.com/layer8/facebook-police-government-user-data-warrant)[^police] want access to the contents of [your phone](https://eff.org/deeplinks/2016/02/apple-americans-and-security-vs-fbi), computer, and [social media accounts](http://dailydot.com/layer8/social-media-border-control-cbp-visa-waiver-program)—whether you're a [suspected criminal](http://businessinsider.com/police-make-fake-facebook-profiles-to-arrest-people-2013-10), a [dissident on a watch list](https://engadget.com/2016/10/11/aclu-police-use-twitter-facebook-data-to-track-protesters), or an [ex-wife](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LOVEINT). The business model of most tech companies is surveillance capitalism. Companies learn everything possible about you when you use their [free app](https://www.wired.com/2017/01/meitu-viral-anime-makeover-app-major-privacy-red-flags) or website, then sell your data to governments, police, and advertisers. There's even a company named Palantir, after the crystal ball in _The Lord of the Rings_ that the wizard Saruman used to gaze upon Mordor—through which Mordor gazed into Saruman and corrupted him.[^palantir] Nietzsche's famous quote, "When you look long into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you," now sounds like a double transcription error: surely he didn't mean *abyss,* but *app.* # Security [[https://cdn.crimethinc.com/assets/articles/2017/02/16/ddos-map.png Heat map of a massive DDoS attack on a DNS provider that disabled several major websites]] Self-replicating malware spreads across Internet of Things (IoT) devices like "smart" light bulbs and nanny cams, conscripting them into [massive botnets](https://krebsonsecurity.com/2016/10/hacked-cameras-dvrs-powered-todays-massive-internet-outage/). The people who remotely control the malware then use these light bulbs and security cameras to [launch debilitating DDoS](https://wired.com/2016/10/internet-outage-ddos-dns-dyn)[^ddos] attacks against [DNS providers](https://engadget.com/2016/10/21/mirai-botnet-hacked-cameras-routers-internet-outage), [reporters](https://krebsonsecurity.com/2016/09/krebsonsecurity-hit-with-record-ddos), and [entire countries](http://boingboing.net/2016/11/04/internet-of-things-botnet-thre.html). Hackers use [ransomware](http://arstechnica.com/security/2016/04/ok-panic-newly-evolved-ransomware-is-bad-news-for-everyone) to hold [colleges](http://latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-los-angeles-valley-college-hacking-bitcoin-ransom-20170111-story.html), [hospitals](http://arstechnica.com/security/2016/03/two-more-healthcare-networks-caught-up-in-outbreak-of-hospital-ransomware), and [transit systems](http://theverge.com/2016/11/27/13758412/hackers-san-francisco-light-rail-system-ransomware-cybersecurity-muni) hostage. Everything leaks, from [nude photos on celebrities' phones](https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/sep/01/celebrity-naked-photo-leak-2014-nude-women) to [the emails of US political parties](http://www.vox.com/2016/7/23/12261020/dnc-email-leaks-explained). # Capital [[https://cdn.crimethinc.com/assets/articles/2017/02/16/trump-tech-summit.jpg 21st century robber barons at Trump's tech summit, December 14, 2017]] Eight billionaires combined [own as much wealth](http://kottke.org/17/01/the-8-richest-men-are-now-as-wealthy-as-half-the-worlds-population) as the poorest 50% of the world's population. Four of those eight billionaires are tech company founders.[^billionaires] Recently, the President of the United States [gathered a group of executives](https://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/14/technology/trump-tech-summit.html) to increase collaboration between the tech industry and the government.[^techsummitattendee] The tech industry in general, and the Silicon Valley in particular, has a disproportionately large cultural influence. The tech industry is fundamentally tied to liberalism and therefore to capitalism. Even the most left-leaning technologists aren't interested in addressing the drawbacks of the social order that has concentrated so much power in their hands.[^californiaideology] # War [[https://cdn.crimethinc.com/assets/articles/2017/02/16/chemical-warfare-nerds.jpg Programming: war by other means.]] [Nation states](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/jun/07/obama-china-targets-cyber-overseas) are [*already*](https://wired.com/2014/11/countdown-to-zero-day-stuxnet) engaging [in cyber warfare](http://zerodaysfilm.com "Zero Days movie"). Someone somewhere[^internettakedown] has been [learning how to take down the internet](https://schneier.com/blog/archives/2016/09/someone_is_lear.html). Tech companies are best positioned to create a registry of Muslims and other targeted groups. Even if [George W. Bush and Barack Obama](http://defenseone.com/threats/2014/08/no-fly-list-has-grown-tenfold-under-obama/90635) hadn't already created such lists and [deported millions of people](http://www.snopes.com/obama-deported-more-people), if Donald Trump (or any president) wanted to create a registry for roundups and deportations, all he'd have to do is [go to Facebook](https://qz.com/874394/we-already-have-a-muslim-registry-its-called-facebook). Facebook [knows everything about you](https://propublica.org/article/breaking-the-black-box-what-facebook-knows-about-you). The Obama administration [built the largest surveillance infrastructure](https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2017/01/obama-expands-surveillance-powers-his-way-out) ever—Donald Trump's administration just [inherited it](http://boingboing.net/2017/01/12/trumps-nsa-will-be-able-to-s.html). Liberal democracies and fascist autocracies share the same love affair with surveillance. As liberalism collapses, the rise of autocracy coincides with the greatest technical capacity for spying in history, with the least cost or effort. It's a perfect storm. *** This brief overview doesn't even mention artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), robots, the venture capital system, or tech billionaires who think they can live forever with transfusions of the blood of young people.
